September 2006: After I returned from my vacation trip thru California with all of its such beautiful places it's now
time to go back and join daily business. We're getting a new intern in our company and I'm the one to train her - my pleasure. She comes
from the same university I'm from. Needless to say that the following week(s) could be quite busy for everyone.
The following days and weeks I processed all the pictures I've made during my vacation. You can now watch them by clicking on the link
"special" in the navigation bar right above here.
The picture on the right side was made near the Ferry Building of San Francisco. It was in the late afternoon but
sun was still setting slightly. Getting not that hard sun rays but warmer colors is one nice side effect of that daytime. Not to forget: the fresh and
chilly breeze accompanying you anytime when you stay close to the bay or ocean -and makes it necessary to wear a jacket, at least.
The background shows the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge
connecting these two cities thru the San Francisco Bay. It's that bridge the upper deck with its lanes collapsed during the
Loma Prieta earthquake on October 17th, 1989.
I took these pictures below on a beautiful saturday afternoon. The day was filled with plenty of sun. So it was suggesting itself having a getaway to Pacifica. That's a location situated south-west of San Francisco. Pacifica isn't close to San Francisco downtown but lies on the outskirts. Normally that location is known for its presence of medium up to quite heavy fog. But on that day it seems I was a lucky boy.
Chinatown/San Francisco is a really nice place to explore and enjoy chinese spirit and some traditions.
But same time it is under influence of western culture and streets like the Grand Ave are a
tourist trap with all of its small souvenir shops. But I love the other side with all of these small side-street shops, restaurants with their
fully loaded menu cards that make it a race to choose what you would like to eat - because so many things
taste awesome you don't wanna miss.
At Stockton Street - less then one mile north from Union Square - a building with people's faces fixes the eyes of the viewers.
It symbolizes how colorful life can be and the colours bring up a smile to everybody watching at it.
A beautiful place embedded at the border among California and Nevada is
Lake Tahoe.
For people love hiking all day long it's a perfect location as well for gamblers.
A whole bunch of hotels and motels are spreaded around western and southern lake territory, just waiting for all different kind
of people with attractive room rates and more special conditions for AAA members. I prefer to stay close to the casinos while they offer
buffets for everyone's taste and wallet. Believe it or not but that's not really a problem spending a whole week or longer over that beautiful resort.
Starting from San Francisco using Interstate 80 northbound and passing by California's capital Sacramento you can't miss the route.
Round about six hours after departure you'll approach the lake. That weekend in end of October was particular sunny.
So some pictures look a bit gloomy while others don't. But watch by yourself...
Santa Cruz, California, is only about one hour ride south of San Francisco. Its history goes back in 1769 when Spanish explorer Don Gaspa de Portolo discovered this beautiful area. Due to the rolling hills above the river he called this place "Santa Cruz" which means holy cross. On this year-around location with more than 300 days of sun a year you should discover its nice downtown as well as the wharf. One weekend I took a rental car and drove down passing Half Moon Bay and ended up in enjoying the beach walk and the little shops, cafés and restaurants close to beach. The beach itself is somewhat crowded when you want to attend in season. But it's worth it. Another eye catching something is the pier. You can either walk or use your car to get on to piers end getting a great overlook. When you walk on it you can also stay there, take a rest on one of its benches and enjoy the sun, the ocean and feel the gentle breeze on your skin ....
Since I've been in San Francisco visting the Zoo was one of my intention.
Since others things messed up my plans I finally went to in first week of October.
I've chosen that day to visit the
San Francisco Zoo located in the
eastern area
near Ocean Beach. Because on every first Wednesday in month admission is free for everybody.
Open for public visitors on 365 days a year you can pick up a warm day with plenty
of sun to enjoy your stay and get inspired by all of tese various animals reside
over there. Also an old-fashioned miniature steam train named
The Little Puffer,
an old-fashioned miniature steam train commutes passing the bears, with views of Eagle Lake and Puente Al Sur.
On that day weather was gloomy and felt temperature wasn't that warm due to the fog and the moisture comes with it.
The pictures below are just snapshots of a cold and windy day not showing too much of the zoo.
But finally it's an inspiration for the next visit getting better pictures of animals, people and facilities was well.
